Exploring the Free SampleTank Libraries: A Musician's Perspective

As music producers and composers, we're always on the lookout for new sounds and inspiration to enhance our creative process. When it comes to virtual instruments, two popular options are Native Instruments' Komplete and IK Multimedia's SampleTank. While both offer a wealth of sounds and capabilities, I'd like to share my personal experience with the free SampleTank libraries and how they've impacted my music-making journey.

I initially grabbed the Komplete bundle due to its sheer breadth of instruments and sounds. However, as time went on, I found myself exploring other options, including SampleTank's stock library. What struck me was the variety of unique and usable synth sounds within SampleTank. Unlike Kontakt's stock library, which felt a bit lacking in my opinion, SampleTank's offering is more diverse and interesting.

One notable advantage of SampleTank is its ability to grab attention from those who already have Kontakt. If you're not satisfied with Kontakt alone, SampleTank might be the perfect addition to your virtual instrument arsenal. For me, the synth sounds within SampleTank are extremely usable, which isn't always the case with Kontakt's stock library.

In particular, I've found that the string sounds in SampleTank's stock library are more impressive than those in Kontakt. The compressor feature in Sampletank takes care of the attack on strings perfectly, allowing for a more realistic and polished sound. This was evident when I used their stock string sound and added an LA2A compressor to achieve the exact string sound I had envisioned for a song.

Recently, I decided to recreate a song from five years ago using SampleTank's free libraries. The results were astonishing – the plugin's quality and usability allowed me to create a sound that was far superior to my original version. Furthermore, the plugins provided by SampleTank are extremely good, although unfortunately, the VST instance isn't as polished.

In conclusion, while both Komplete and SampleTank offer impressive virtual instruments, I believe that SampleTank's free libraries have more to offer in terms of usability and variety. Whether you're a seasoned musician or just starting out, exploring the free SampleTank libraries can be a great way to expand your creative horizons and discover new sounds.
